How Dance/Movement Therapy Heals Grief and Loss: A Holistic Approach to Emotional Well-Being

Grief and loss are universal experiences, yet they are deeply personal and can be overwhelming. Whether it's the loss of a loved one, the end of a significant relationship, or another major life change, grief can manifest in ways that impact both the body and mind. While traditional talk therapy is often recommended, there’s a growing recognition of the benefits of a more holistic approach: Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT).

Understanding Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT)

Dance/Movement Therapy is a therapeutic approach that uses movement to help individuals express and process their emotions. Rooted in the belief that the body and mind are interconnected, Dance/Movement Therapy enables individuals to explore their grief in a non-verbal, creative way. By engaging in guided movement, clients can access and release emotions that may be difficult to articulate with words alone.

The Healing Power of Movement

1. Emotional Expression and Release

Grief often comes with a whirlwind of emotions—sadness, anger, confusion, even guilt. At times it can feel like waves of emotions. These emotions can become trapped in the body, leading to physical tension and discomfort. Through Dance/Movement Therapy, individuals can physically express these emotions, leading to a sense of relief and emotional release. Movement allows for the safe exploration of feelings, offering a way to process grief without the constraints of language. As a Dance/Movement Therapy I believe that there are not always words at first to describe how you are feeling.

2. Creating a Safe Space for Healing

Dance/Movement Therapy sessions are designed to be a safe, non-judgmental space where individuals can explore their grief at their own pace. The therapist works closely with the client to ensure that the movement activities are tailored to their needs, creating a supportive environment where healing can take place. This sense of safety is crucial, as it allows individuals to confront their grief without feeling overwhelmed. I believe in person-centered therapy where I meet you where you are at on your journey.

3. Mind-Body Connection

One of the unique aspects of Dance/Movement Therapy is its focus on the mind-body connection. Grief can affect both mental and physical health, leading to issues like depression, anxiety, and fatigue. By engaging in movement, clients can reconnect with their bodies, fostering a sense of wholeness and well-being. This holistic approach can lead to greater self-awareness and a deeper understanding of how grief impacts the entire self. This creates body and mind awareness which will lead to a sense of grounding and peace.

4. Building Resilience Through Movement

While grief is a natural response to loss, it’s also an opportunity for growth and transformation. Dance/Movement Therapy helps individuals build resilience by encouraging them to explore new ways of moving and being in the world. This can lead to increased self-confidence, a greater sense of control, and the ability to find meaning and purpose after loss.

Easy Tips for Incorporating Movement into Your Grief Journey

You don’t have to be a dancer to benefit from movement. Here are some simple ways to incorporate movement into your daily life as you navigate grief:

Gentle Stretching: Start your day with gentle stretches to release tension and connect with your body. Focus on your breath and allow yourself to feel whatever comes up.

Walk in Nature: Take a walk in a natural setting. Pay attention to your surroundings and let the rhythm of your steps soothe your mind. See how many items or things you can notice along with the sounds. Did you notice something you’ve never seen before?

Create a Movement Ritual: Set aside time each day for a movement ritual. This could be dancing to your favorite song, swaying, or even just moving your arms. Let the music guide you. My favoriate song is “Shake it Off” by Taylor Swift.

Mindful Breathing with Movement: Combine deep breathing with simple movements like lifting your arms overhead or swaying side to side. This can help you center yourself and release built-up emotions.
